Question: Our quartzite countertops etch anytime anything that drips on it. The Builder has come out multiple times and added sealer as a means to correct the etching issue. These marks show up right after washing hands and water drips on the stone (for example) What can be done?
Answer: Sealer for stone are impregnating-your countertop looks like the sealer was over applied and or misapplied. Sealers are applied to the surface and then they penetrate the surface to inhibit the intrusion of staining agents temporarily. All signs of the sealer must be removed from the surface or the sealer itself will etch.
Second-if your stone was etching prior to the application of a sealer (or sealers) then your stone is not quartzite but most likely a dolometic marble. This is quite common as the importers are being told by the exporters that the stone is a quartzite but in reality it is incorrect.
